We wrote this post on how to hire any remodeling contractor. Advice on ways best to avert a remodeling nightmare.
Having worked several years for home remodeling contractors, we discovered a couple of things besides how to waterproof a shower or build a room addition. We learnt firsthand that there are contractors that were evil out there lying and looking to take advantage of you.
The bad and Ugly
“Some” contractors will inform you just about anything to market their occupation. They make up stories and will make promises, whatever is required to seal the deal. Who wishes to work with someone like that or need to deal with that person for 3 weeks or so? You need to only engage with one who has your back completely. This implies that one who will do whatever it takes to make the job right and make you more happy. At least that is what we think a contractor should do. The reality is some contractors look at your project for a money making experience and not as a remodeling experience. We know contractors twice your age with half the knowledge. They are only businessmen with not much construction experience.
Look out for salesmen! Maybe a it has only been a week since they have the job and After getting fired from the car dealer. My experience with sales people is that they will let you know exactly what you are searching to hear to close the sale and don’t understand the details. When your project has been assembled they will not be around. Who will be responsible for running your job and the workers? Speak to the contractor! Additionally, you should try to speak with their references. Call the homeowner and ask a bunch of questions like, did they do as promised? Did they create change requests? Can they finish on time? How would you rate the quality?
Also we recommend to visit with recently finished job and speak to the homeowner directly and see that the job for yourself. In the process, be sure that the contractor does not go. If the customer was joyful they wont mind and they will be happy to promote the contractors business. Think about it, they had been in your shoes a couple months ago.
Get it in writing
Ensure you have the details all in writing. Make sure you do not pay before job completion and have a payment / progress schedule. Get a start and end date in writing. We’ve observed remodeling contractors blame the homeowner because the job didn’t go as intended. Do not give them a budget as this will be like giving your credit card to a child. You must have a thorough list of what it is you’re currently receiving for this amount and a set cost.
Don’t be frightened
This guide is meant to protect you, not scare you. You will find good remodeling contractors on the market, but you have to secure your home for the ones that are terrible as you need to be educated. Bear in mind to watch out for the wolf in sheep’s clothing or something like this.
Finally check on the internet for reviews and also the contractors’ board.
